Seed Savers Exchange, a nonprofit organization in Decatur, Iowa, allows seed warriors to save and share heirloom garden seeds for future generations. SSE's diverse offerings include traditional varieties grown by Native Americans, Mennonites, and the Amish. 'Collective Farm Woman Melon' is apparently a much sought after variety from the island of Krim on the Black Sea.

Few food consumers comprehend the true scope of their garden heritage or how much is in immediate danger of being lost forever. Consider showering Mom with heirloom seeds for Mother's Day as proof that you are in it for both the generational and ecological long haul.
