Design Your Life is the thinking person's blog. Co-edited and co-hosted by genius twins, Ellen and Julia Lupton, the site is an extremely thoughtful repository for the ways in which design continuously shapes and informs our lives. This is DIY thinking at its best. The credibility of the Luptons also elevates the comments and postings on the site to a high level of integrity and genuine know-how.
I recently participated in a dialogue on DYL about urban art farming and my daily rituals for bridging the agro with the metro.
Ellen Lupton brought to my attention the zero-maintenance MoMA rooftop project of Ken Smith. I had no idea that this pasture of pop art existed in the midst of midtown's money-lined streets. The actual pattern is based on a skateboarder's camouflage pants. The plantings are plastic and the rooftop is completely inaccessible. Art (gardening) for art (gardening)'s sake?
Ellen Lupton will speak about DIY design and her recent book project, D.I.Y.: Design It Yourself (2006), at The Museum of Art and Design in NYC on January 4, 2007.
