Julia Lohmann's Kelp Creations

Posted on: Sunday, April 20, 2008

There is a lot of sustainable design and haute-craft buzz from this week's Salone Internazionale del Mobile, and I have been hoping to hear news of Julia Lohmann's dried kelp lamps and sculpted marine forms. The London-based artist is creating a series of luminescent seaweed designs inspired by her recent residency in Sapporo, Japan. An on-site demonstration of Lohmann's process can be viewed at gallery Nilafur as part of the Panta Rei exhibition which runs through the end of May.

If you have not yet seen the artist's 'The Catch' project addressing excessive deep sea fishing and the depletion of our oceans, this is a must see, too.
