Mackenzie Frere's Netscapes

Posted on: Monday, April 07, 2008

I was recently introduced to the fiber work of Canadian artist, Mackenzie Frere, by way of his online forum/blog, Art Cloth Text. Frere's work is not only technically stunning but also poetically and ethereally breathtaking. I was particularly drawn to the floating panels and woven scrims featured on the artist's website

His 'Net in the Water' piece (pictured below) really caught my eye with its delicate topography and multi-dimensional properties. I was also completely 'ensnared' by Frere's writings on the im(material) and his homage to French philosopher, Gaston Bachelard.

Mackenzie Frere's exquisite fiber work can be seen at the Illingworth Kerr Gallery at the Alberta College of Art & Design from now through April 18, 2008.  The artist also curates the online gallery for mixed media and fiber, Poplar Artcraft, which will be featuring my site-specific fiber installation work in the not too distant future.
