Textile Arts Center SHOP and New Designer Initiatives

Posted on: Tuesday, September 10, 2013

I am so excited to announce the remake of the Textile Arts Center's website and the opening of their online SHOPI attended their launch celebration in Manhattan last week, and it was great to see so many artist/designer friends coming together to support  textile arts and the local fashion/maker community at large.

The Textile Art Center's new Manhattan SHOP at 26 West 8th Street in NYC

I spoke with Adrienne Antonson, TAC's Marketing and Retail Manager, textile artist, and founder of the Brooklyn-based label STATE regarding the mission of the new SHOP and related programming, and she shared the following:

"The SHOP is a platform that showcases the skills and aesthetic of TAC's contemporary textile design network. The space is a representation of our textile community – designers, instructors, and students and the work they make using both age-old and modern textile methods."

"This retail platform introduces the work of these designers to our audience and focuses the conversation on process, execution, and style. The store will also be a welcoming event space that showcases the methods of designers by offering workshops and demos that highlight our monthly collaboration series – an exclusive collection from a designer or brand that is available only through the TAC shop and online store. The regular series will include the product, an opening event, storefront window installation, and demos or workshops about the process used to make the design. We aim for these collaborations to expose our audience to new brands, techniques, and items that they'll want to add to their collection.  The TAC SHOP is unique in being able to offer an educational component to the shopping experience. It's where we stand apart, and what we do best."

"We believe that the SHOP is a natural extension of the Textile Arts Center's community and message, and hope that it inspires, educates, and brings fantastic style to the masses."

All I can say is that the spirit at both TAC's Manhattan and Brooklyn locations is truly contagious, and the new 26 West 8th Street store is a brilliant solution to shopping with substance and direct connection to the makers. When else does educating yourself about your purchases also include access to the tools, methods, and instruction that goes into making fashion more accessible and frankly, far more inclusive?
