It was such a tremendous joy to receive this latest issue of HAND/EYE magazine at the beginning of 2012. I have had such a love affair with New Mexico's landscape since my first pilgrimage in 1995. This current edition of HAND/EYE genuinely demonstrates why both rural and urban New Mexico are interwoven to create 'the land of enchantment'.

As many of you may already know, I keep a visual journal on Tumblr called, Lost In Fiber. I started gathering these images as a record of my research on ideas related to 'fashioning self and the environment'. For a long time, I have been dreaming of highlighting select images from Lost in Fiber in a new series called, Off The Grid Runway – an illustrated sequencing of how contemporary fashion can and should exist in the context of environmental relatedness. For me, this is an important layer in our understanding of why fashioning self is an act of artful resourcefulness and deeper connectivity.

Here is a sampling of images from the Vogue Knitting Live 'art gallery' this past weekend. My fiber forms were actually handled and touched a lot more than I was hoping for, but all in all, it was a positive experience. I just do not understand why folks cannot learn by looking rather than by handling. It is a curious thing. I guess that I should take it as a compliment that my pieces looked so tactile that touching seemed appropriate? Something to ponder.

I leave for Sofia today. NYC, I will miss you. Thank you for the injection of love and inspiration. See you when the sweet blossoms emerge and winter hibernation is complete.

Fiber Forms Incubating for One More Day

Very sorry for the long hiatus in posting. Thing have been busy with the holidays in Eastern Europe, travel to Belgrade and NYC, as well as a lot of small details to complete for my fiber forms that will be exhibited in the gallery at Vogue Knitting Live this weekend.

I will be posting photos of the final installation after tomorrow, but for now, here are two detail shots to give you a sense of the palette, textures, and visual treatment.

Solstice Snowfall in Sofia

We had such a magical snowfall the first official night of winter here in Sofia. The following morning I took some of my recycled fiber / works in progress and pomegranate seeds from the kitchen out to the park to play in the snow.

I loved the way that this crocheted 'plarn' (recycled plastic yarn from shopping bags) and the pomegranate seeds looked in a field of white together. Soon all of these organic textures will be migrating to NYC for Vogue Knitting Live – less than three weeks away.

Curator Hildreth York wrote a wonderful introduction on contemporary fiber art expressions which includes my environmental fiber art project, 'Crocheted Snow' pictured here. I am so honored to be included in such a beautiful and timely publication.

" A thoughtful survey of fiber sculpture and wall art portrayed in 335 vibrant images and insightful text. Explore the work of three generations of fine artists who have opened their minds and spirits to the boundless range of expressive possibilities in textile methods or materials. Even as the art on these pages references weaving, crochet or quilting, traditional textile notions disappear in the hands of serious artists, appropriating essential elements for their contemporary concepts."

Plarn + Recycled Lace Fiber Forms (In Progress)

Here are a few early stage examples of the recycled fiber forms that I am creating (to be exhibited in conjunction with older work) for VOGUE Knitting Live in January 2012. The recycled plastic bag yarn, or 'plarn' has been very colorful and sculptural to work with.

The graffiti-laden streets of Sofia offered a vibrant backdrop when I took several works out for a walk around the neighborhood today. I do this sometimes in order to provide an injection of hue and texture when I am making something over an extended period of time in the studio.

Jardin de Fortune by Bjios

I love this recent urban renewal project of slow crafting horticultural promise – poetically orchestrated by Montreal-based artist friends, Audrey Lavallée et Chloé B. Fortin of Bjios.

Read more about Audrey and Chloé's work as interventionists, fiber and textile art farmers, and community activists. This latest project offers a laboratory of specimen examination, poetic fragments, opportunities for connection and cross-pollination, as well as a handmade blanket of love over the surface of an abandoned parking lot in Montreal.

There will be an opening reception and artist talk by Nari Ward at the Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia on Friday, 4 November 2011, from 6 to 8 pm. Ward's residency project is a recycled fiber and text-based project entitled, We The People.

"Nari Ward’s debut of his installation made in collaboration with The Fabric Workshop and Museum, also named We the People, transcribes the opening phrase of the United States Constitution on the museum wall using hand-dyed shoelaces. These key words “We the People” become powerful clichés, as Ward believes that it is not possible to make these words his because of their strong association to the Constitution. Ward is, however, able to “reclaim” these words by integrating the shoelaces into the text, as a hybrid material, revolutionizing the viewer’s reaction through the magnitude of the arrangement and adaptation of the piece."

The artist previously used dyed shoelaces in his piece, Crying Form, Rising Symbol in 2010.

During my recent research on innovative ideas related to 'fashioning self and the environment', I came across this amazing Casa Básica Project by Martín Azúa. I love that this mobile unit folds into a simple square that one can slip into one's pocket or personal tote. It's pure volumetric poetry with a low-impact sort of footprint. This is what great design is all about.

Fashion Weeks Come And Go

As mentioned in my previous post, I did not return to New York City for (sustainable) fashion week at the start of September due to travel to Eastern Bulgaria and the Turkish border. News of fiber and textile expressions showcased during fashion week have already circled 'round the globe and will surely generate sustained dialogue about the role of handcrafting and slow fashion methodologies on the fashion landscape.

When back in the NYC for a visit later this fall, I definitely plan to see the zero-waste fashion exhibit, Yield: Making Fashion Without Making Waste, which opened last Friday with a private viewing at the Textile Arts Center in Brooklyn. Amy DuFault of EcoSalon did a fantastic review on the timely mission and thoughtful curation of the show.

Another outstanding show which opened during fashion week is Principles of Design: Pratt Fashion Alumni curated by Sarah Scaturro of Fashion Projects and Exhibiting Fashion. Read the review by Jennifer Barckley of Organic Girly on assignment for EcoSalon.

Plarning A Better Future

Despite the temptations to return to New York City for fashion week and other celebrations that officially launch today, I have decided to remain in Eastern Europe and Italy throughout the month of September (and into the fall) as I initiate new art projects and do a bit travel.

Historic building in Malko Turnovo, Bulgaria

A handcraft collaboration that I am particularly excited about is my small-scale project with local Tsigani ("Roma") women in Eastern Bulgaria who are recycling and twining plastic shopping bags into "plarn". This very simple and resourceful technique of turning discarded plastic into skeins of fiber is a great way for a non-biodegradable material to stay out of the region's pristine landscapes and village streets while also providing income for women who are currently unemployed in this region of Bulgaria.

I have commissioned my first delivery of plarn by the meter, and I will drive to the rural corner of Southeast corner of Bulgaria tomorrow evening to pick it up and stay for the weekend. This material will be used in new fiber forms that I am creating for exhibitions during 2012. While others are celebrating Fashion's Night Out in cities all over the globe on September 8th, I will be staring up at the night sky in Malko Turnovo dreaming of 'plarning a better future' for talented women and artisans everywhere.

Lost in Fiber: The Backstory

I cannot believe that today is Labor Day. My summer in Sofia has been phenomenal, but it has also passed so quickly. I love the slower pace of life here and the view of Mount Vitosha from my terrace – it makes for the perfect counterpoint to NYC and its dynamism.

I have an assortment of new projects underway for the remainder of 2011/start of 2012, one of which is my new visual journal, Lost in Fiber. Many of the images were included in last Spring's talk, Fashioning Self and the Environment, at FIT in NYC. Whether as an art, fashion, fiber, textile, or environmental window – all are meant to build bridges between freer personal expression and ecological awareness. I am doing a lot of research these days on land art as a richer context for highlighting sustainable fashion ideas. You might recognize images from historic land art projects from the American West as well as remote landscapes globally. This is all part of a residency project that I am planning for Spring 2012.

Wishing you all a beautiful and creative start to Autumn 2011, or the inverse of this, depending upon where you reside or choose to roam.

It is a beautiful thing when hands, hearts, and minds join forces to celebrate textile diversity and global artisans working to preserve the traditions of handwork and sustainable crafting. The summer 2011 edition of HAND/EYE magazine has done just this in its latest issue devoted to World Textiles.

The seventy-two page volume serves as a feast for the eyes, as well as an inspirational guide to socially and environmentally-responsible textile projects and designer initiatives that span countries such as Cambodia, Chile, Colombia, Ethiopia, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Peru, South Africa, and The Netherlands, to name a few.

Kate McGregor of Kaight NYC and Brooklyn, the premiere destinations for sustainable fashion and stylishly handcrafted goods, will curate a cool assortment of fashion and accessory objects in conjunction with Fair Folks and A Goat’s June exhibition, Leaf // Cloud: Nature Tangible and Transcendent, curated by Alicia Lubowski-Jahn.

All of the artists participating in the trunk show address sustainability through their use of textiles, handwork, and the natural dye process. Exhibitors include: Abigail Doan, Ceca Georgieva, Fr. Faces and Places in Fashion Talk at FIT on May 16

I will be speaking at FIT on Monday, May 16th as part of their Face and Places in Fashion lecture series. Although the lecture is geared to FIT students, the public is invited to attend free of charge. Seating is on a first-come-first-serve basis, though. The talk will take place between 4pm and 5pm, with a Q&A session for the latter portion of the presentation. The topic will be 'fashioning self and the environment'.

"FIT’s 'Faces & Places in Fashion' lecture series is a forum for prominent fashion professionals, including executives, designers and marketers to discuss their trade, their experience, and their perspective on the business. Part presentation, part Q&A, it is an opportunity to connect students and the public alike to the pulse of the fashion industry in a conversational setting. Held in the Katie Murphy Amphitheater (D Building, Corner of 27th Street and 7th Avenue) on Mondays from 4pm-5pm."

Good Work May Day Event: Fiber Bracelets for Iran

I was thrilled to participate in Good Work's May Day celebration at the Textile Arts Center this past Sunday. My afternoon workshop was an occasion to craft fiber 'peace' bracelets to be exchanged with Atefeh Khas and Tara Goodarzy, Iranian environmental fiber artists who I have collaborated with in the past. The goal was to create a kit of braided bracelets that I will send to Iran in exchange for the contribution that these artists made to my exhibit, (Re)Fashioning Fiber, in NYC last May.

His work at the Paradise Art Center in Polour is where many of these artists have found a safe sanctuary to work and explore their ideas. He has been a great art friend and collaborator for the past several years. Congratulations also to Tali Weinberg, curator of 'Good Work', for an exceptional textile show and community building experience.

Eve Mosher and Renata Mann: Environmental artist Eve Mosher and fiber installation artist Renata Mann have teamed up to debut (Intra)structures for Earth Day 2011.

Anjelika Krishna of a.d.o clothing: A native of New Delhi, India, now based in New York, Anjelika founded ‘anjelika dreams organic’ or ‘a.d.o’ as a true expression of her commitment to sustainable practice as well as traditional Indian culture. Her collections incorporate carefully selected organic textiles and Ayur-vastra (Indian natural herb dye). Anjelika will share her extensive knowledge of ayurvedic dyes and natural plant materials.

Susan Benarcik: Known for her dramatic sculptures and environmental installation projects crafted out of recycled and nature-based materials, Susan will share her resourceful and innovative methods for creating organically inspired textile and surface designs.

Rachel Miller: As a sculptor, educator, and sustainable textile expert, Rachel bridges a variety of disciplines to tell a story that is rich in texture, pattern, and ecological awareness. Her work focuses on environmental patterns and how they interconnect with our own patterns of growth, departure, and ongoing rejuvenation. Daria Dorosh of Fashion Lab in Process: An award-winning multimedia artist and researcher in field of art, fashion, and technology, Daria will share work created in the area of programmed knits with the assistance of John Kiehl and Jose Marinez. The team will demonstrate “why pattern is a rich language between fashion, science, and technology.” Knit samples from Stoll, NFC (near field communication) tagging technology, sonification of textiles, and algorithmic patterns for textile design will all be discussed.

As part of my recent re-introduction to NYC, I was finally able to soak up 'Teem: an installation' while visiting the Textile Arts Center in Brooklyn last Thursday for meetings and a Japan fundraiser event. Created by artists Mary Babcock and Christopher Curtin, Teem's site-specific dream space references bodies of water in a meditative and completely immersive manner.

"Suspended horizontal planes of lightweight, translucent silk are blown by rhythmically timed fans as audience members are beckoned to lie beneath this "screen" of textiles that mimic the constant flux of the ocean's surface. Six shibori hand-dyed silk "rivers" rotate in negative space above the billowing white silk surface below. These "rivers" interact with the ocean as the large silk surface is gently blown up into their paths. Each is affected by the gentle caress that takes place, and the result is mixing of the diaphanous silk and the ephemeral, fleeting movements of the river above."

The timing was perfect for my visit as 1) I was still a bit jet-lagged, so the opportunity to stretch out on Teem's floor futons and gaze overhead at the waves of silk and the shibori-stained waterfalls in the front windows was completely restorative, and 2) I was able to donate to and at least catch the first part of a shibori-dye workshop that TAC was sponsoring as a fundraiser for Japan. The event raised $300 U.S. dollars for World Vision and participants were also able to learn more about an ancient dye process in conjunction with the opportunity to discuss recent events or simply the day that had unfolded. This is why TAC is such a valuable resource and paradigm for how to build community. Understanding textiles helps one to decode what connects us as well as differentiates us, as decisions are made about materials, techniques, and the intentions put forth in what one is crafting and envisioning.

There is no doubt that February is the month when we begin fantasizing about shedding our layers and sloughing off winter skin in preparation for the warmer days ahead.

Designer Camille Cortet wants to aid in this process with her Snake and Molting legwear, designed out of laser cut fabric that shows cumulative wear and tear based on the user's activity.

Snake and Molting legwear is part of Cortet's 'Transformations: Body Ornaments' series.

The designer states, "By observing animals’ transformations we understand their behaviours, and ... thus start a process of transformation. My process is to (simulate) these animal inspired behaviours in 3 stages: copying, merging, and translating. The translation stage is about adapting these behaviours to our own culture. It is a way to create new gestures and a new body language within clothing and ornaments."

Just this past week, I received these images with a message from the Iranian environmental artist and PhD design student, Farzaneh Najafi. She had created these poetic photos as part of a performance piece on environmental awareness and global warming, particularly in relation to the severe drought that has impacted her homeland of Iran. Farzenah is currently studying in Malaysia, hence the lush greenery that you can see in the background of these photos.

I applaud Farzaneh for her initiative to stage a non-violent act of protest and contemplation in reaction to the severity of climatic environmental crisis. This is yet another example of how we should be working collaboratively with our Iranian (artist) friends to build secure bridges for peace and long-term solutions that are essential for preserving the planet that we all share.

I recently received a lovely 2010 update from Dutch textile artist and designer, Marianne Kemp, and I wanted to share a few images from her latest designs and installation projects. I featured Marianne's work in June of 2009, and since then she has completed some amazing exhibitions and commissioned projects, all while also finding the time to travel to Mongolia to research her materials and unique craft.

Marianne weaves with small quantities of horse hair that comes from the tails of the weaker horses who are raised by local herders in Eastern Mongolia. They select only those horses who are not expected to make it through winter as sustenance for their families. The hair is typically used for utilitarian things such as rope, although Marianne has now introduced more contemporary decorative uses in her projects. The Mongolian women have really taking a liking to her work and who knows what shared sustainability initiatives are possible.

These hand-forged iron chimes created by Dr. Ahmad Nadalian and local artisans in Iran epitomize the spirit of a magical paradise and the cultivation of harmony with nature. My dear friend never ceases to amaze me with his ongoing outreach efforts in rural Polour and far beyond. His work with a whole generation of environmental artists in his homeland is shaping the future eco-art initiatives and cultural preservation.

If ever there was an image that spoke to the magic of the holiday season and all things promising, it would have to be Dr. Nadalian's cylinder seal sand prints as depicted above and below. The cylinders are made with rudimentary materials like recycled cans and bottles, although the resulting images are of timeless value despite their impermanence on local sandy shores.

People often ask me how I get work done with three year old twins, and I would have to say that work gets done, but the process resembles nothing like the days prior to having children. Space and time are collapsed into some sort of jig-saw puzzle that miraculously gets pieced together throughout the day, although in no specific order. Sure I aim to keep a set schedule and run a tight ship, but the 'happenings' are so numerous, I feel more like a film editor who is marveling at random scraps on the floor that are delightfully out of sequence and literally underfoot.

Textile Arts Center Studio Residency

The Textile Arts Center (TAC) in Brooklyn will soon be expanding its programming to fulfill its mission as a resource center for the textile community at large. As of this winter, they will offer studio residencies to (6) six working artists or designers who are dedicated to working with textiles and looking to further their participation in the community at large. This new Studio Rental Program will begin on January, 2011, and there are also sorts of amazing benefits included in the monthly rental fee. Urmila Mohan's 'Moving Home' mixed media installation at The Hunterdon Art Museum in Clinton, NJ

Artist Urmila Mohan comments on her 'Moving Home' exhibition - on view at The Hunterdon Museum of Art through December 5, 2010:

"In Moving Home I use the ephemeral packing peanut as a symbol of the permanence as well as the transience of home – the two different yet related states of being rooted and routed. I subvert the functionality of packing peanuts by casting them in white clay slip and hide their image within the screen-printed camouflage pattern on fabric and wallpaper. By covering the elements of the installation, like the wall, upholstered couch and disembodied traveler’s suit with packing peanuts “skins,” I represent the corporeality of surfaces and question how we create, define and simulate identity."

An excerpt from the curator's statement:

"Working at The Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia, Mohan also created fabrics and wallpaper that incorporate the image of the packing peanut into a camouflage pattern. She uses these materials to transform the gallery into a domestic space. A matching “traveler’s suit” hangs in the room, suggesting the missing human presence that is required to complete the idea of home."
